Folding fan, the sticks and guards carved with intricate fretwork, the leaf painted on the recto with figures buying and selling fruit, vegetables and flowers on the piazza at Covent Garden, London. Note the fashionably pale faces of the female consumers (an indication of their high status) in comparison to those of the sellers, whose lives spent working outdoors is evident in their tanned complexions. In the background can be seen the church of St Pauls, designed by the architect, Inigo Jones.

The Covent Garden market was, from the mid-17th century to as recently as 1974, installed on the central piazza and became an important source of fresh consumables for London’s ever-expanding population until it relocated to Nine Elms.
