George Harrison left home in Kent to become an artist against his parents’ wishes; he moved to the Conwy valley in the early 1860s, married a local woman and settled in Ty Gwyn in a cottage near the Waterloo Bridge at Betws-y-Coed. He soon made friends with other local and visiting painters, and became a member of the newly formed Cambrian Academy of Art that found a base in Conwy in the mid-1880s.

Although Harrison became an important member of the artistic community in North Wales and seems to have made a respectable living as a landscape painter, he is known to have suffered financial difficulties later in his career. Nevertheless, this painting presents an image of idyllic cottage life in what must be the Conwy valley.

The Royal Cambrian Academy of Art possesses miniature portraits of Harrison as a boy and Harrison’s mother.
