Signed and dated by the artist, lower right. The review took place in Spithead, Portsmouth, on the afternoon of 15th June 1953 and the view here look west and slightly north from ahead of the lines of major ships present. To the left is the Trinity House Yacht 'Patricia' with the battleship 'Vanguard' immediately behind at the head of 'F' line in the review. Astern of 'Patricia' is the Bay-class frigate 'Surprise' flying the Royal Standard and being used as royal yacht for the occasion, with HM The Queen on board ('Britannia', then under construction, was not delivered until 1954). To the right is HMS 'Redpole' flying the Admiralty flag with HMS 'Glasgow' at the head or 'E' Line directly behind her. The moment shown appears to be when these three vessels had passed through the fleet in review between 'E' and 'F' lines and were about to take up position for the flypast that concluded the event: 'Surprise' took position between 'Glasgow' and 'Patricia' at the head of 'E' line and remained there overnight, the royal party disembarking the following day. The painting was commissioned from Wilkinson by the Museum and he was present at the review on board HMS 'Dido', which was at the head of 'D' line, the next one to the right, just out of frame.
