This painting is a loose representation of a cupboard with a bowl of fruit on the top shelf and a jug at the far end. The bottom shelf has two pigeons, a bowl with fruit and two large long-necked jugs.

Sir Robin Philipson, RSW, RGI, RCAA, HRHA, ARSA, RSA, ARA, RA, PRSA, was born in Lancashire and studied and taught at Edinburgh College of Art. Known for his expressionist use of paint, he is particularly renowned for his cockfight paintings, a series begun in the early 1950s. His later work in the 1960s explored more general figurative studies as well as church and cathedral interiors and crucifixions. Philipson was well known for his bold use of colour and his liberal use of heavy impasto in his works.
