The title refers to the first plague inflicted upon the peaceful reign of Lludd, King of Britain, as told in the prose tale Lludd and Llefelys, one of the Middle Welsh stories collectively known as the Mabinogion. The plague involved the influx of a mysterious race of people whose knowledge was so great ‘that there was no discourse over the face of the Island … that they did not know about if the wind met it. And because of this no hurt might be done them.’ Selwyn Jones-Hughes was born in Dolgellau and trained at Liverpool Art College and then the Royal College of Art, London. He taught at Wigan and Liverpool Institute of Higher Education (now Liverpool Hope University). This abstract painting on a Celtic theme is comparable to other work done by the artist in the 1970s.
