Levitan is regarded as Russia's foremost painter of landscape. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting and became a teacher at the school from 1898. On stylistic grounds this study can be placed late in Levitan's career. It probably dates from the autumn of 1898 when Levitan was staying on Lake Senezh in Central Russia.
