Emily Elizabeth Constance Jones was a philosopher researching in ethics and logic. Her publications included 'An Introduction to General Logic' (1892), 'A Primer of Logic' (1905 & 1910) and 'A Primer of Ethics' (1909). She was a member of the Aristotelian Society and the Society for Psychical Research. In 1896 she became the first woman to deliver a paper to the Cambridge Moral Sciences Club. She was Mistress, and Research Lecturer in Moral Science, at Girton College, Oxford from 1884 to 1916 and acted as a Governor of University College of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1892 until an unknown date. This painting is probably a study for the full-length portrait that hung at her home, Llancayo House, Usk.
