This small column shaft or colonette came from a doorway or perhaps from one of the 'blind' arches in the cloister of Reading Abbey. The decoration features beasts and foliage designs in medallions. Only two thirds of the surface is carved, the part that would have been hidden from view in the wall behind it being left plain.
