In 1967 Editions Alecto commissioned a set of six screenprints on a still-life theme. Caulfield produced full-size colour models on card, including this painting, from which the printer Chris Prater at the Kelpra Studio cut stencils for the screens. The resulting prints were thus both handmade in their conception, but also removed from the artist's hand. The process was complementary to the stylistic approach of his paintings, as it enabled flat and even areas of saturated colour demarcated by strong outlines.
