Founded by Muriel Belcher in 1948, the Colony Room on Dean Street was the most popular of Soho's drinking haunts. Andrews was a regular together with Auerbach, Bacon, Freud and Minton and in 1957 he painted a mural for the club after the artist Pierre Bonnard. This painting was assembled from Andrews' recollections of a typical evening. From left to right it shows the writer Jeffrey Bernard; the photographer John Deakin (his back to the viewer); the model Henrietta Moraes; the photographer Bruce Bernard (in profile); Freud (facing out); Muriel Belcher (turned towards the bar); Bacon (seated); Ian Board, the barman; and Carmel, Belcher's girlfriend.
