This portrait was presented to the sitter on the occasion of his silver wedding by his workpeople at the Tower Works. Madingley Hall owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Colonel Harding who bought the estate from Mr Hurrell in 1905 and found it in a rather poor condition. Colonel Harding and, after 1927, his son Ambrose, thoroughly renovated the Hall and made sympathetic alterations to both the exterior and the interior. He was already 63 when he purchased the Hall but did not hesitate on occasion to assist with the practical work of renovation.
