Like other versions of this portrait, it is inscribed with the name of Sir Charles Lucas, who led the defence of Colchester against Cromwell's army in 1648. On the fall of the city, he was captured and executed. However, it has recently been proposed that it shows Colonel Richard Neville (1615–1676), another Royalist commander. Dobson's original is in the National Portrait Gallery.
