Coffee is made from the seeds of the coffee plant. Known as ‘beans’, the seeds develop inside bright red cherry-like fruits.

There are many species and varieties of coffee plant. Today, just two supply most of the global demand for coffee. Arabica (Coffea arabica) has a sweet full flavour but needs cool temperatures and is vulnerable to disease. Robusta (Coffea canephora) has a bitter, earthy taste, grows well in warmer climates and is generally more resilient and easier to grow. Together they produce around 10 million tonnes per year.
