This painting shows a Cumbrian scene by a local artist. Born May Bolton at 18 John Street, she was one of eight children. She spent her childhood in Barrow and Newton. In 1930 May married Telford Stephenson, spending several years in the USA. Returning in the early 1960s to Robert Street, May began to paint when confined to bed, infirm and starting to lose her sight.
