A central sculpture, tall and commanding in presence, is surrounded by sculptural seating on tri-coloured paving in Simon Hitchens' regeneration of Workington town square. The square engages with and represents the meeting of land and sea, and Hitchens uses this to various effect in his choice of design and material. Created out of three different colours of granite, the paving stones are the most literal illustration of this, coming together to form a map of the West Cumbrian coastline, with the central sculpture delineating where the centre of Workington sits on a map. This centrepiece, four metres in height, is crafted out of polished granite and resign, two juxtaposing materials in terms of their suggestion of fluidity and hard surfaces.
