Landscape painter Etienne Allegrain was a member of the Académie Royale and executed a number of works for the royal palaces in France. He was heavily influenced by the works of Claude Lorrain and Nicholas Poussin, the most important landscape painters of seventeenth-century France. This painting is executed in their manner, with a carefully worked out foreground, middle ground and background. The exact subject matter is not known, but the Classical temple on the hill on the right suggests that it is set in Classical Greece or Rome.
