The two fountains in City Square are accompanied by four relief sculptures with poetry. The sculptures represent the four classical elements of fire, water, earth and air, which were of interest to the artist at the time. The modelling on each reflects these themes, whilst bringing in local features such as RRS Discovery and the unicorn on the Mercat Cross. The poems are from local Angus writers, chosen by the artist – earth features Violet Jacob’s ‘The Tod’; water is illustrated by Mary Brooksbank’s ‘Lunan Bay’; fire is represented by Joseph Lee’s ‘The Mercat Cross’; and air by David Blyth’s ‘The Gale’. The original water fountains were dandelion-shaped but caused many technical problems for the council and were therefore changed to the cascade-type features now in place.
