Christ's Hospital was founded by Edward VI in 1552 as a charitable institution for educating destitute children. In its early days it admitted foundlings, but due to the overwhelming demand admission was soon limited to the children of freemen of the City of London. Christ’s Hospital was also known as the 'blue coat school' because of the distinctive blue uniform worn by the boys, one of whom can be seen in the foreground of the painting. The spire of Christ Church on Newgate Street can be seen in the background. Samuel Wale is best known as a book illustrator, but was also a history painter. He was born in Yarmouth and moved to London where he trained under Francis Hayman and Hubert Gravelot at the St Martin’s Lane Academy. Wale was elected a Governor of the Foundling Hospital in 1746.
