This is a head and shoulders portrait of Christopher Rowntree, JP, who was Governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers in 1952 and helped to restore the Hall in the 1920s.

He sits, wearing a dark suit, and a white shirt with a red tie, against a grey background.

Christopher Rowntree was the last member of the family to work at the Rowntree Company. The Rowntrees were a prominent Quaker family deeply involved in the relief of poverty and suffering in York and elsewhere.
