Nugent was a successful doctor in Bath during the 1750s. Subsequently, he moved to London and enjoyed the society of intellectuals. He was a member of Dr Johnson’s literary club.

Barry produced very few portraits. He may have painted this one because of personal connections, as artist and sitter lived in the same street. This striking, timeless image is inspired by Classical and Renaissance art, which Barry admired.
