Perhaps once part of a series depicting the Stations of the Cross, mediations on the last days of Christ's life, this scene depicts Christ meeting his mother. Christ kneels on his right knee and carries part of the cross on his back. The artist, Evie Hone (1894–1955) was a prominent Irish painter and stained glass artist who initially worked as a member of the An Túr Gloine (Tower of Glass) stained glass co-operative in Dublin before setting up her own studio. Her faith deeply influenced her work and she converted to Roman Catholicism in 1935. This panel is unique and was possibly directly inspired by the work of Expressionist artist Georges Roualt (1871–1958). A small black and white photo of the panel exists in Evie Hone's archive and is one of her own photos and it mounted, suggesting it was especially of interest to her.
