The depiction of Christ carrying the cross was a popular subject in devotional paintings made for the domestic setting, and was frequently employed in Italy as well as Northern Europe.

Christ is shown here in close-up and the diagonal line of the cross he is carrying dominates the composition. These features were common in the traditional treatment of this subject and are found in many works by various artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Lorenzo Lotto, Giovanni Bellini and Titian, to name but a few.
