Artist; studied at Chelsea School of Art (1988–1991) and Royal College of Art (1991–1993). Included in Whitworth Young Contemporaries (1989, 1990 and 1991) and NPG's BP Portrait Award (1990 and 1991). In 1991 won a British Council Travel Scholarship to Zimbabwe which lead to his adoption of elephant dung, which supports and decorates his paintings. He uses collage and paint to comment on ugliness, conventional beauty and identity with diverse references to popular culture and African art. Included in Sensation (1997), won Turner prize (1998).This early painting is one of a number of self-portraits painted when Ofili was a student.
