In 1807 a Chinese court of justice was set up in the Canton factory of the East India Company to determine who had murdered a Chinese man. This painting depicts the first of three trials of suspects from among English sailors. Many famous Chinese merchants and officials of the East India Company were present. A lithograph was made of the picture by M. Gauci and published in England by Graf & Soret. There is another version of this painting at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, and they also have a companion picture showing the scene outside the courtroom before the trial.
