The three relief panels depict scenes of childhood. The figures were modelled on the sculptor Jacob Epstein’s own children and grandchildren. They represent the younger generation which Liverpool was being rebuilt for. The left-hand relief depicts young boys scrapping. The central relief shows a baby sitting up in a pram with a dog. The right-hand panel depicts children playing leapfrog. David Lewis opened his first shop on Ranelagh Street, Liverpool in 1856. It expanded into a massive department store which was rebuilt after a fire in 1888. In May 1941 the building was destroyed by enemy bombing during the Blitz. A new Lewis's store was designed in 1947.
