This portrait forms part of a montage of 46 unframed portraits of Chelsea Pensioners mounted 10 abreast in five rows as a single work. Joe was a good friend of Frank Chambers, also featured in this montage, and he spent a lot of time during the Second World War as part of Ghost Force, a unit responsible for a massive deception operation to divert German intelligence away from the true location of the second front in Europe.
