This is a benign portrait of the novelist Charlotte M. Yonge, a friend of the Gibbs family from Tyntesfield, in middle age. Born into a religious family in Otterbourne, Hampshire, where she lived all her life, Charlotte was home-taught by her father. She began writing in 1848 and wrote some 160 works which showed the influence of the values and concerns of the Anglo-Catholicism of the Oxford Movement. John Keble, Vicar of Hursley, was a neighbour and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement.
