Charlotte Moberly, known as Annie, was born in Winchester, the tenth child of George Moberley (Headmaster of Winchester College, and from 1869, Bishop of Salisbury). She remained at home until 1886, when she was invited by Elizabeth Wordsworth (whose brother had become Bishop of Salisbury on George Moberley's death in 1885) to take charge of the newly formed St Hugh's Hall. Annie Moberley remained Principal for nearly 30 years and oversaw the expansion of St Hugh's from a hostel for four students in Norham Road to a College of over 60 students poised to move into the purpose built building it now occupies. She remained a member of the College Council until her death in 1937, became an Honorary Fellow and was made an Honorary MA in 1920 when Oxford degrees were opened to women.
