A three-quarter length portrait slightly to left of Charles Weston. He wears a brown silk gown, large white bow at his throat and a fur hat of a type commonly worn by sailors. He is shown holding a letter in both hands of which the seal is broken. The sitter is seated in a leather chair in front of gold drapes. On his right is a table with a large book, pen and ink and an inscribed piece of paper. Beyond is a ship at sea on the left. There is a partly legible inscription with the words ‘Portland’ ‘Charles’ ‘Roi’ and ‘London’ still recognisable. Lord Weston succeeded to the earldom in 1663. In 1665 he served aboard the ‘Royal James’ as a volunteer and was killed at the battle of Lowestoft.
