Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart, eldest son of the 6th Marquess of Londonderry, was educated at Eton and Sandhurst. He was commissioned into the Royal Horse Guards in 1897 but left the army in 1906, when, as Viscount Castlereagh, he was elected Conservative MP for Maidstone. In 1915 he succeeded his father as 7th Marquess. In 1919 he was appointed finance member of the Air Council (1920–1921). He resigned from the position in 1921, to take up the leadership of the senate of the newly-established parliament of Northern Ireland. He also held the position of Minister of Education in the same parliament and remained in office until 1926. In 1923 he was appointed chancellor of Queen’s, a position he maintained for the rest of his life. He also served as chancellor of Durham University.
