For 25 years, Moran (1883–1977) was physician to Winston Churchill. He accompanied Churchill to wartime conferences at Casablanca, Cairo, Teheran and Yalta, and became famous after successfully treating him for pneumonia. In 1966 Moran published a book, 'Winston Churchill: the Struggle for Survival 1940–1965', which detailed events from Churchill’s diary as well as conversations and incidents of national importance, and personal and medical details. For this, Moran was criticised by Churchill’s family and the British Medical Association for disrespecting patient confidentiality, but Moran explained his duty to make these facts known to posterity. Moran helped establish the National Health Service, and in 1941 was elected president of the Royal College of Physicians.
