Charles Lewis Meryon (1781–1877) studied medicine at Oxford University and St Thomas’s Hospital, London. He became medical attendant to Lady Hester Stanhope whom he accompanied on her travels around the world. This position took him to Sicily, the Middle East and Mount Lebanon and he spent many years of his life in her service which he recorded in his 'Memoirs of the Lady Hester Stanhope'.
