Displayed in a gilt frame, this full-length portrait of King Charles II (1630–1685), as Prince of Wales, is attributed to London-born portraitist William Dobson (1611–1646). Charles II was the son of King Charles I, who was executed on 30 January 1649; his reign in Scotland commenced immediately, while his reign over England and Ireland did not begin until 29th May 1660, due to the English Interregnum or de facto republic, led by Oliver Cromwell. Against a plain background, the somewhat chubby-cheeked Prince stands facing forward, his body turned slightly to his right, his right hand resting on the top of a wooden staff. He wears a red dress and yellow jacket with lace collar, gloves, calf-length boots and sword to his left side. In his left hand he holds a feathered hat.
