The painting depicts a scene in front of Field House in Clent, one of the Crompton-Roberts' properties. The family is walking out with a pony, which son Henry Roger is riding, and the other children (Charles Montagu and Violet Mary) are playing. The delightful portrait shows Mary Crompton-Roberts in a full crinoline and one of the boys dressed in tartan, a very popular fashion of the day influenced by the Royal family. It is a very conscious statement of the typically successful, happy, rich Victorian merchant's family.

The signature of the artist is just visible in the bottom left-hand corner of the painting. Barker was an English historical and portrait painter famous for painting military tableaux. When the work was restored, the restorer pointed out that some of the animals in the scene seem to have been added at a later date.
