The original was probably painted for the 1st Duke of Hamilton in around 1636, after the death of Lord Herbert in January that year. Lady Mary Villiers is depicted as Venus (goddess of love), a suitable companion for Cupid. Lord Arran was the son and heir-apparent of the Duke of Hamilton.
