After completing the original portrait of Charles Dickens commissioned by John Forster, Dickens’s biographer, in 1859, William Powell Frith produced a number of replicas; the most notable being the facsimile for Mr F. W. Cosens. When restoring the Cosens portrait, Frith asked if he may produce a copy of it to keep for himself. This painting is that copy and it stayed in Frith’s possession until his death in 1909.
