Charles Coates (1826–1909) was the grandson of General Coates, who served in the American War. He studied medicine at Aberdeen University, and later held junior appointments at Bradford Infirmary and Brompton Hospital. After completing his MD degree in 1857, he settled in Bath. There, he was elected physician to the Royal Mineral Water Hospital, of which he later became the senior governor. He also worked at the School for Daughters of Officers in the Army, and the Royal United Hospital, which appointed him consulting physician when he resigned from its staff in 1882. Coates’ private practice grew to be the largest in the neighbourhood. He generously donated £1,000 to the Bath Bluecoat School, and to the Royal College of Physicians, London, of which he was a fellow, to be spent on hospitality.
