The sitter was a scholar at Wadham from 1891 to 1895 and was a cricketer and all-round sportsman. This work was painted by Fairfax working from images supplied by the family but imagined in an original pose. The site is identifiably the interior of Jackson's, the cricket pavilion in University Parks (designed by Sir Thomas Jackson, fellow), which Fry would have known well.
