Charles Binns was born into a Lancastrian farming family, but later married the daughter of Joshua Walmsley MP, who was one of George Stevenson’s partners in the Clay Cross Company, Chesterfield. Formed in 1837, it became known as one of the most important iron and coal companies in the north of England. Binns’ close family ties with the company later proved advantageous when Stevenson first appointed him to the role of secretary for the works and collieries of Clay Cross.

This work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1869, no. 407.
