Charity, one of the three theological virtues with Faith and Hope, is represented as a woman with three children. Since the sixteenth century she has commonly been depicted suckling the children, as she is here, whilst another drinks from a bowl. This is one of eight exquisite paintings on copper now at Stourhead which were commissioned by the duc de Choiseul. They were exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1771.
