With a personal life that often overshadows his artistic achievements, Duncan Grant stood as a leader in the modernist art movement. He took inspiration from French painters like Paul Cézanne and the Fauves, and surrounded himself with fellow artists. Scottish born, Grant attended London’s Westminster School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, as well as Paris’s La Palette School. As a member of the Bloomsbury group and founding member of the Omega Workshops, he created decorative items, theatrical costumes and scenery, prints and paintings. He injected his portraits and landscapes with a lively use of colour. This painting was purchased in 1953 by Camberwell Council, after being exhibited at South London Gallery, as part of the newly forming collection of British contemporary art.
