This is an example of the photo-realist style which regained popularity among some artists in the 1970s. It takes an unexceptional object as the focus of a large work. The sea-grass stool is lovingly described in all its everyday familiarity while the inclusion of the sensitively painted tumbler uneasily balanced on the edge adds a note of tension.
