Cattle standing in a stream in a forest, the whole being an Italianate landscape with a yellow colouring sky overshadowed by clouds. A herd boy rests in the right foreground, hanging against a tree. This work shows a classicist influence in a not necessarily Dutch but rather ideal landscape of calm, which is reflected in the harmony between human and animal, the peaceful sky and the balanced composition.

This style makes it possible to date this work somewhere between 1650 and 1670, as it shows the influence of the Baroque going into Mannerism, a time when the Dutch landscapists broadened their horizon and expanded their painting traditions into a new landscape with foreign influences.
