This artist was one of the most influential female artists to emerge from Scotland in the years immediately after the Second World War. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1943 and went on to secure a post-diploma scholarship in 1948–1949 that enabled her to travel to Italy and France. She returned to Glasgow and set up a studio close to the deprived Townhead area, where she became known for her drawings and paintings of poor city children, often playing in the streets. In the early 1950s she started visiting Catterline, a small fishing village near Stonehaven in the north-east of Scotland. Here she produced numerous seascapes, often showing the same view but in different light and weather conditions and frequently took to working out of doors. In this study of Catterline, the darkened skies and breaking waves recall the raw power of mother nature.
