Catherine Seyton is a character from 'The Abbot' by Sir Walter Scott. Frith shows her seated on the battlements of Loch Leven Castle, where she is imprisoned with Mary Queen of Scots. The painting is from a large collection of works bequeathed to the Harris by Richard Newsham (1798–1883), a Preston lawyer, in 1883. Newsham was an avid collector of contemporary art, and was known to be a Patron of Frith. In a catalogue compiled by Newsham, the entry reads 'Catherine Seyton, Looking from the battlements at Loch Leven, by W P Frith, purchased in 1866 from the late Mr J C Grundy', a north-west print seller and art patron. The painting has also been attributed to Edwin Landseer, possibly due to a similar engraving published in 1833, after Landseer.
