Castle Howard, which is 15 miles to the north east of York, is one of England's grandest Baroque mansions. It was designed by John Vanburgh and Nicholas Hawksmoor for Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle. Lord Methuen studied under Walter Sickert and exhibited widely, including with the New English Art Club. He was also a trustee of the National and Tate galleries.
