On 15th February the historic hilltop abbey of Monte Cassino, high on a peak overlooking the town of Cassino, was destroyed by 1,400 tons of bombs dropped by American bombers. The bombing was based on the fear that the abbey was being used as a lookout post for the German defenders. This scene, from the perspective of a Black Watch soldier as he emerged from their Headquarters in the town at night, was painted from memory. The artist, aged 22, was commanding No. 1 Platoon 'A' Company, 6th The Black Watch. The painting is very dark and uses black, grey and white to indicate that the painting is at night. The town is a mass of ruined buildings and rubble shining in the moonlight, and in the background three large hills loom above the destroyed town.
