John Cawse's portrait was the last painted of Weber, dating from between 15 March 1826 and his death on 5 June. Weber spent the duration of his stay in London at the house of Sir George Smart, a great friend and the pre-eminent British conductor of the time, whom Cawse also painted. During these months Weber was immersed in completing his last opera 'Oberon', which was premiered on the 12 April at Covent Garden under the composer's baton.
