Cardinal David Beaton was a Roman Catholic and was assassinated in 1547 by Fife noblemen after he had Wishart burnt at the stake. He was the uncle of Mary Beaton, a close friend and attendant upon Mary, Queen of Scots. This portrait was originally in the Scots College in Rome and was brought to Scotland in the 1830s. It was painted around 1600 in Italy.
