Cardinal Charles Erskine was the protégé of Cardinal Henry, Duke of York, brother of Prince Charles Edward Stuart. This portrait (which bears a strong stylistic resemblance to the portrait of Cardinal Henry in the Blairs collection) probably came from the Scots College in Rome where he had been educated by Cardinal Henry, Duke of York.
